What do you get for the person that has everything? It’s an age-old question we always hear around the holidays. Thankfully, Closets by Design has you covered with some gift ideas you probably haven’t considered.

It’s gotten so difficult to shop for significant others in recent years that many households are skipping gifts altogether. Call us old-fashioned, but we still love receiving something special during the holidays. Even better, we have some great ideas for how you can surprise that special someone in your life.

Instead of racking your brain trying to think of the perfect gift for your partner, you should seriously consider giving them somewhere to put all those incredible gifts!

We’re talking about upgrading your storage space for the holidays with a new closet, pantry, or organizational system to bring peace on Earth to your home — and your relationship!

Find out how you can win this holiday season by giving the gift of organization!

Give Them the Closet They’ve Always Dreamed Of

A luxurious walk-in closet by Closets by Design.

It’s been reported that people will give up some wild things to have more space in their closets. Thankfully, you don’t have to make any drastic sacrifices to upgrade your closet with Closets by Design.

Even without a full closet remodel, there are all kinds of changes you can make that can maximize your space to make your closet seem bigger and more efficient.

Not only do people want more space in their closet, couples also fight about sharing closet space. A custom closet system could be just the thing to give your partner the space they deserve. It might even improve your relationship!

It has been shown that a tidier home leads to a happier relationship. Maybe some organization is just the spark your relationship needs. See how you can upgrade your closet this holiday season to give your partner a surprise that keeps on giving.

Install the Perfect Pantry for the Foodie in Your Life

A custom pantry set into a wall from Closets by Design.

If you or your partner love cooking, baking, or just eating, then you’ve probably given plenty of kitchen gadgets and cookbooks as gifts. These can be thoughtful, but what if you already have a stand mixer with too many attachments?

Instead of adding more clutter to the kitchen, you could find a way for your partner to store and organize all their stuff! If there’s one thing that foodies love, it’s an organized kitchen with everything at arm’s reach. The same goes for your pantry.

Consider adding custom shelving solutions to your pantry to find the perfect place for ingredients, spices, and more. Improving your pantry and kitchen storage is a terrific way to make this room one of the coziest and well-organized rooms in your house. That’s not to mention finding a place to put all those holiday sweets and treats!

A Place to Put Those Special Holiday Bottles

A custom wine rack and organization system from Closets by Design.

If the market trends are to be believed, then there’s a good chance that many people may be giving out a different kind of holiday cheer for gifts this year. Alcohol sales are up more than 25 percent, and sales traditionally double during the holidays. With so much cheer flowing around the table, where are you going to keep it all?

Even the nicest and most well-meaning bottles take up space on the shelf. If you plan on saving some of the nicer bottles from friends and family, then you’re going to need a place to store them.

If it’s a particularly rare or valuable bottle, you may want to show it off in a special light. Installing a custom wine rack and organization system is a wonderful way to store your wine. It also lets you add much-needed organization to show off that special bottle for your holiday feast.

Clutter. It’s depressing. It’s exhausting. The disorganization that comes with clutter creates stress. The creep of stuff around the house can trigger the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which can increase tension and anxiety.

Even people with adequate physical storage space — including closets, pantries, and garages — may find that these spaces themselves can become the source of chaos. This is especially true if they are ill-designed. Are your closets stuffed to the max? Can’t find anything in your packed pantry? Then you might need a little professional help!

Closets by Design provides custom solutions for organization — including reach-in and walk-in closets, pantries, laundry spaces, home offices, and garage storage. We also provide all the accessories necessary to furnish a functional space — including cabinetry, shelving, cubbies, drawers, racks, jewelry trays, tilt-out hampers, and wall organizers. If you can imagine what your perfect space would be, we can build it. And if you cannot imagine what it needs to be? That is why we have professionals who can help you personally evaluate your comprehensive needs and what designs will best serve you.

If you are truly stuck, you might even want to make a call to us your first step in canceling the clutter in your home. Meanwhile, here are some tips to get you started.

Closets

If you have not done a thorough purge of your bedroom closet lately, it will make your decluttering project a little longer but more productive in the end. You will be able to really assess your space and what it lacks.

  • Get rid of whatever you do not wear. To help you truly determine what you do not wear, try this trick. Face hangers in one direction and turn them around when you wear what is on them. After six months, clothes on hangers facing the original direction can be put in the donation pile.
  • Hang tops and skirts over built-in shelves or drawers and hang long dresses and pants on higher rods where there is nothing underneath.
  • Consider installing a system with slanted shoe shelves. A hanging shoe storage system is a temporary option, but shelves will help shoes last longer and keep them out of the way (yet on display).
  • It is easy to make a mess if you do not have designated spots for smaller items, like ties, belts, and jewelry. Pros can install a tie drawer, jewelry drawer, and a sliding belt rack to help keep such items organized.
  • Look for unnecessary items that may have intruded on the space, like unused sporting gear or electronics. Move these to garage or living room storage areas.

Pantry

You may turn your pantry inventory over quickly, but most of us have those jars and cans that seem to remain untouched.

  • Remove everything from the pantry and purge! Check the expiration dates and toss everything that is past its prime. If you have food items that are still good, but you know you will never use them — consider donating to a local food pantry.
  • After a quick wipe down, begin to put things back in an organized way. Clear containers and bins are helpful for corralling things by type, such as a bin for snack bars, one for chips, etcetera.
  • Consider decanting pasta, rice, and cereal and baking items like flour and sugar for a more streamlined look.
  • One of the benefits of having a custom pantry installed from Closets by Design is NOT dealing with wire shelving. It is so much easier to organize items on flat shelving.
  • Some of the trends we are installing in home pantries include drawers with acrylic fronts so you can easily see what’s inside and wire baskets that pull out. These are great for storing vegetables.

Garage

If your car is in the driveway all the time because it will not fit in the garage, you are going to need a lot more than a broom and dustpan. Make a plan and pace yourself!

  • Dedicate a full day or weekend to decluttering and organizing the garage. You can even make it a family project.
  • Sort items into piles — Keep, Donate, Sell or Toss — with those “toss” items, be sure to identify the items that can be recycled.
  • Keep items that you use frequently, such as pet leashes, within easy reach — perhaps on hooks by the door.
  • Create zones for groups of things such as auto care, gardening, and sports equipment, so that like items are stored together.
  • Place rarely used items, such as holiday decorations, on shelves or in cabinets. We install a line of extremely study cabinetry and shelving units specifically designed for garages.
  • Tools like shovels and rakes as well as bicycles are best stored by hanging on the wall. Our slatwall system is perfect for these items. You can move the hooks around and even pop on baskets and bins to hold smaller items.

Imagine having a garage where there is also room for your car. Closets by Design can not only provide garage organizational solutions but also help you outfit custom work areas for carpentry or other hobbies.

Let Us Help!

Decluttering would be less of a chore for many people if they did not feel like they were just moving “stuff” from one place to another. Having a custom home organization system might seem like too much of a luxury, but quality, affordable options are available to you. Contact our professionals today for a free consultation.

Our closets are something that we see and use so often that it’s easy not to give it much thought. How much do you really know about your closet? Do you know about the history of your closet, or why they call it a closet in the first place?

Let’s take a walk through the ages to discover the history of the closet, where it comes from, and where we can expect it to go.

Closets Date Back to Roman Times

At its simplest, a closet is a room, cabinet, or recess designed to hold clothing, china, and other possessions. It should come as no surprise that such a fundamental and helpful space would have been around for some time.

It turns out that some of the earliest people to use a closet were Roman soldiers. The soldiers needed a more practical way to store and transport weapons and armor, especially on long journeys. These storage units were called “armoriums.” As you might have guessed, the Latin word “armorium” became what we know today as an “armoire.”

Closets Became More Common in Early Modern Europe

In France during the 16th century, the armoire came to popularity among the upper class as a way to store weapons, tools, and clothing. There were even closets in England as early as the 1550s. However, these early closets had more in common with walk-in closets than the reach-in closet you’re familiar with.

These closets and were closer to a small private study instead of what we think of as a closet today. They were often used to store odds and ends like maps and books rather than a place to keep your coats.

As industrialization happened across the world, and goods were more affordable and easier to produce, people had more stuff to store. This led to a change in how people viewed and used the closet, but it wasn’t until much later that the modern closet started to take shape.

Closets Take Shape in the 1800s

The idea of the closet, as a dedicated space built into the home for storage, happened in the United States around 1840. We already told you about how Europeans had rooms called closets and used similar pieces of furniture for hundreds of years. However, it was Americans that established the closet as its own space built directly into the wall during the 19th century.

The convenience of the closet built into the home rapidly became a standard feature in many American homes. It was nowhere near as expensive or bulky as furniture like armoires and chests. However, while Americans (and the rest of the world) were starting to warm up to the closet, they also didn’t give the closet too much thought.

It wasn’t until the 1950s, after World War II, that we started to really see what we think of as the modern closet.

America Creates the Modern Closet

The economic boom following the war led to an even larger consumer culture in the U.S., and increased need for a place to keep everything. More people began moving to the suburbs and buying larger homes. These larger homes came with closets, and Americans had plenty of new clothes to fill them with.

Closets by Design Reinvents the Closet in 1982

By the 1980s, people started to look at their closets in a new way. The question now became what you could do to upgrade their closets to make them more attractive and efficient. Enter Closets by Design.

Closets by Design was founded in 1982, and the way the world looks at closets hasn’t been the same since. Thanks to its incredible custom-tailored designs and commitment to total customer satisfaction, Closets by Design has reinvented the closet and continues to lead the way in modern closet design today!

]]>
Over the last few months, many of you have done an amazing job of reorganizing your closet. Now it’s time to figure out what to do with the extra clothes you no longer need or want.

After all the work you’ve put in making your closet look amazing, it’s time to put your closet to work for you!  A famous person once said, “Ask not what you can do for your closet. Ask what your closet can do for you.”

You never know. Your closet may be hiding cash you never knew about.

Who What Wear reports that the average woman probably has between $1,000 and $2,500 worth of clothes and shoes that she won’t miss. That’s a serious amount of money that could be spent on all kinds of things. You could even use it to buy more clothes or upgrade your closet!

Learn how you can turn your closet into your own private cash cow. And not all of the ways involve clothes.

Consider Consignment

One of the first ways to turn your closet into cash is through consignment. Consignment can be a wonderful way to ensure you’re getting top dollar for your items and know that your beloved clothes are going to a good home.

Unlike other places like pawn shops, you don’t get paid immediately when you give your clothes to a consignment shop. Instead, the consignment shop agrees to accept your items and sell them for you in their store. If and when the item sells, you get paid, and the shop keeper keeps a piece of the sale price.

Putting your clothes in a consignment store can be a great way to get your clothes in front of potential customers. Online consignment shops like the RealReal and Poshmark are wonderful ways to make money on your lightly-loved designer goods.

Reports show that secondhand clothing is more popular than ever, so it’s a great time to be a seller of quality, secondhand goods. However, unless you’re dealing with designer brands that you’re confident will sell, it may take at least a month or two before you see any money.

Donations Can Be A Tax Deduction

Do you have quality clothes in good condition that may not be right for consignment? Don’t throw them out! Those old clothes can still turn into serious savings on your next tax return. You should seriously think about donating them to your local thrift store or a worthy charity such as your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or veterans charity.  As long as your items don’t have holes or stains, you can feel great about donating them and someone will benefit from your generosity.

When you donate your clothes, make sure you don’t just throw a bunch of clothes in a bag and call it a day. As you put together your donation pile, keep a list of what you’ve included and a general idea of what it’s worth. This “fair market value” will be useful later.

After donating your clothes, the store will give you a receipt for you to itemize your donation on your next tax return. A lot of the time, the charity won’t fill this out for you. That’s where the list you made comes in handy. Add up the fair market value of your clothes and use that number on your receipt to deduct it.

What’s more, many thrift stores are non-profits that do a lot to help their local communities. Donating to these stores can be a great way to clean out your closet and get a tax deduction while also giving back.

Sell Your Stuff Online

The internet has opened a whole new world of options when it comes to selling your stuff. Popular auction sites like eBay have been a great way to earn extra cash for a long time. There are even sites specifically designed for selling or renting clothes.

Whether you’re getting rid of designer clothing you never wear, or lightly-worn children’s clothing your kids have outgrown, there are all kinds of ways to profit it from it on the internet. You can choose to go with the online auction route or even try selling your clothes directly through social media on Facebook Marketplace.

The downside of selling online is that you’re going to have to package and ship those clothes once they sell. It can be a lot of work, and it could become a job in itself, depending on how many items you’re selling.

Try a Yard Sale

You know you want to sell your clothes, but you don’t want to deal with the hassle of doing it online. If that’s the case, then you should have a yard sale! When everything must go, there’s nothing like a yard sale to get rid of it.

With a yard sale, there’s no paperwork, shipping, or driving involved. All you need to do is set up your stuff on the lawn and let the people come to you! The downside to a yard sale is that you might not get as much for your clothes as you would selling them online or through consignment. Even so, yard sales can also be a lot of fun for the whole family.

We all have our preferences when it comes to our favorite styles and colors. However, the colors you choose to decorate your home are more than a reflection of your taste. Have you ever thought about what your closet color says about you? There’s a lot more that goes into your color choice than you realize, and you may not even notice it!

It turns out that the colors and shades we surround ourselves with can have a profound impact on our lives. In fact, the colors in your home do more than reveal your personality traits; they can affect the mood and behavior of you and your guests.

Depending on the room and how you use it, you may want to adjust the color of your cabinets and closets to better reflect what you want from your space.

Here is what you need to know about what your cabinet color is saying and how you can pick the right color to perfectly complement your home.

Browns and Woodgrains Convey Security and Sincerity

A custom walk-in closet with a wood finish.

Brown is a popular color when it comes to cabinets and closets. However, this isn’t just because of the materials! Brown is a color people find in nature, so wood grains and browns can communicate feelings of security and reliability. This is a big reason why browns go a long way to helping your house feel like home!

Decorating your home with a lighter woodgrain can help conjure a feeling of genuineness in your room. Meanwhile, darker browns evoke a natural warmth in the home that also communicates comfort. Be sure to balance browns with other, brighter colors to create a room that feels both positive and protective.

Use Warm Colors to Create Cheerful Rooms

When planning a color scheme for your home, it’s important to consider what you want to achieve with each room. Is this a room for quiet and relaxation or a lively living room where people gather and talk? Make sure you’re choosing the right color for your cabinets to send the right message.

For example, if you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, especially with your family, then you may want to opt for a motif that is bright, cheerful, and conducive to happy and positive attitudes while cooking and eating.

Lighter and brighter colors on the warmer end of the spectrum convey a sense of happiness and well-being that can extend to both you and your guests. These include reds, yellows, and oranges to help you feel active and alert.

Bold Black Represents Elegance and Perfection

A walk-in closet with on-trend black and white decor.

Black is always a bold choice when it comes to colors. There’s no question that black is always a strong statement, but the choice to go with black also reveals a lot about you and your own personality. If you love the look of a sleek black finish for your cabinets, then you may be a powerful perfectionist at heart!

While some people may view black with negative connotations, many people see black as symbolizing power, elegance, and formality. Another great thing about black is that it goes with everything! Just like how your “little black dress” is the most versatile piece of clothing in your closet, black cabinets and doors are the perfect complement to any room.

White is a Blank Canvas for Purity and Goodness

A custom walk-in closet with a white finish.

White is another option that says a lot with a minimalist look. Traditionally, white has come to symbolize purity and innocence in Western culture. This is a major reason why the color is so associated with wedding dresses. But it wasn’t always that way!

Actually, white wasn’t a popular color for wedding dresses until 1840, when Queen Victoria wore a white dress when she married Prince Albert. At the time, white was worn as a color for mourning. Of course, once the royals started a new trend, everyone wanted to get on board, just like today!

And white does more than represent a world of possibilities and a fresh start for every room. White also has a practical application by making rooms feel larger and more spacious. This is especially helpful if you’re dealing with an apartment or smaller room.

Everyone has different ways they like to organize their closet. Some people prefer to arrange their clothes by style while others sort their clothes according to season. Organizational experts will tell you that one of the best ways to coordinate your closet is by color.

There are all sorts of benefits to organizing your closet by color, and it’s a lot more than looking great! See how the right kind of closet organization can make your life easier while also saving you time and money!

Save Time in the Mornings

Everyone wishes that they had more time in the morning. Between getting kids ready for school, making breakfast, and getting everyone out the door; getting dressed often takes a back seat. How often do you find yourself quickly grabbing something out of the closet, giving your outfit a quick glance in the mirror and dashing out the door?

When you organize your closet by color, it’s easy to see what you have and pick something out for your workday! Before your closet makeover, you were forced to search through your entire closet to find one specific item. When you organize your closet by color, you’re searching through a much smaller section of your closet. This makes it much easier to find that green top you need. Not only will color-coding your closet help you look better, you’ll also save time!

Make Vacation Packing a Breeze

One of the most stressful parts of a vacation is packing your bags. How do you decide on each outfit and what you need to bring? Are you going to need a jacket or a sweater? Where is that cute pink blouse you love so much?

Arranging your clothes by color simplifies packing by sorting everything in one central place. Now, you can just take a look at your closet and quickly find a matching piece to the skirt or pants you are packing. It becomes even easier when you add a custom closet system from Closets by Design featuring custom shelves and cubbies. Custom shelving gives you even more organizational options to let you arrange your closet by color, season, and occasion while convenient cubbies provide extra space for those hard to categorize pieces.

Fun and Easy to Create Outfits

Everyone loves putting together a great outfit. Mixing and matching different clothes to see what you can put together is a fun way to show off your creativity while looking and feeling great. Of course, it’s hard to put together an outfit when you can’t see or find your clothes. How many of us have lots of our favorite clothes lying in piles in our closet or stuffed into drawers? It makes it hard to see all of your options!

When you organize your closet by color, you’re essentially creating a giant color wheel to help you pick the right outfit. All you need to do is stand in front of your closet and take a good look. You may be surprised by how inspired you are when you have your clothes in front of you.

Enjoy a Handy Shopping Guide

Nobody can remember and name every piece of clothing in your closet. When you are out shopping, you may not remember you wanted to buy a certain color top or bottom to match something you already have. By having all your clothes organized by color, it’s easy to see what you have and easier to identify what you need.

Looking for the perfect sweater to pair with that lovely purple skirt? Take a look at your perfectly organized custom closet to see what is already there. You may be surprised by what’s hiding in your wardrobe.

Wow Friends with Your Wardrobe

There’s one big advantage to arranging your closet by color that you may not have considered. We’re talking about how amazing it will look! Organizing your closet into a radiant rainbow of fashion is enough to wow even your most critical of friends.

A beautifully arranged color spectrum of all your clothes quickly becomes more than a practical organization system. It turns into a defining feature of your room itself. Talk about fashionable and functional!

Upgrade and Organize Your Closet Today!

By now, you should know all of the great reasons why you should organize your closet by color. Are you ready to reorganize your life? One of the best ways to get started is by upgrading your closet! Here are five tips to save you from the closet crazies. They might also save your relationship.

1. Purge Your Cluttered Clothes

One common complaint we hear from people about their closets is that they have too many clothes. The truth is that most of us probably have too many clothes. There are ladies holding onto old dresses they never wear. You also have to deal with guys clinging to shirts and pants that should have been retired years ago. Regardless, we have far too much stuff cluttering up our space. That’s why cleaning out your closet needs to be your first order of business.

We’re all familiar with Marie Kondo by now. It doesn’t have to be that extreme, but a closet audit is in order. Each partner needs to go through their clothes. If you haven’t worn it in a few years or it has holes or stains, it’s time to give it up. You can also take seasonal clothes like winter coats and keep them in a separate storage space until you need them.

2. Divide and Conquer Your Closet

Once you’ve cut down on your clothes, it’s time to decide how to share your space. Just remember that fair doesn’t always mean equal. Depending on your personal clothes quotient, you might want to consider a 70/30 arrangement as opposed to an even-steven 50/50.

Take the time to find something that works best for your relationship. Does one of you have more clothes than the other? Divide up the space based on the needs of each to ensure each has adequate space to keep their items organized.

3. Upgrade Shelving and Storage for a Quick Solution

So, you’ve gone through and cleaned out your clothes. You even came to a healthy compromise when it comes to splitting up the space. But what if you still don’t have enough room in your closet. It’s time to call the professionals to help you organize your closet!

Closets by Design can help you optimize your closet. Thanks to our free, in-home consultations, customers can realize the full potential of their closets. You can add closet accessories like extra, pull-out shelves to make room for shoes, sweaters, and other items. There are plenty of other helpful changes you can make to your closet to ensure you’re getting the most out of your space. By working with the pros, you can double, triple, or even quadruple the amount of storage space in your closet.

4. It’s Time for Another Closet

By now, you and your partner have pretty much done everything you can. You cut down on clothes, you’ve split up your space, and you’ve put in extra shelves. Even with all of this, it still isn’t enough! This is when it’s time to face facts. You need another closet.

Even in your dream home, your closet just might not have the kind of square footage you need. There are plenty of beautiful houses that have gorgeous designs but itty bitty closets. That’s where a custom closet comes in. You can work with a professional to create a new closet from a spare room and add doors to increase the storage space of your new walk-in closet. Whatever you end up deciding, trusting the pros when it comes to your custom closet goes a long way to protecting your sanity, and your relationships!

5. Lay Down the Law

Congratulations! You have the closet you’ve always wanted. There’s a place for everything and everything is in its place. Now you need to make sure that it stays that way. Get together and decide on rules you can live with. These could be rules like, “no clothes on the closet floor” or “everything gets folded and put away right out of the laundry.”

Whatever you decide with your rules, stick to them! Rules don’t help if nobody follows them. It may start with a crumpled shirt here and there, but before you know you’re back where you started. Still, it isn’t the end of the world if you relax on the rules a bit. If you find your closet making your crazy, you can always schedule a free in-home design consultation with the pros at Closets by Design.

Connecting with our communities and giving back is just as important as providing our customers with fantastic custom closets. Commitment is a core part of our brand promise, and it extends to everything we do. That’s why it only made sense for Closets by Design, the home improvement industry’s fastest-growing custom organization franchise, to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Working with the amazing people at Make-A-Wish is its own reward, but we never expected what happened next.

Meet an Inspiring Spirit

When we first heard about Jenna’s wish for a new closet, we knew we had to make it come true. The courageous seven-year-old girl was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (type 2) when she was only 18 months old. The disease is characterized by progressive muscle weakness that has left Jenna with limited arm strength and almost no leg strength. Her diagnosis also comes with its own regular battery of tests. In addition to blood work, Jenna also receives spinal tap injections. These injections are part of a drug trial to further slow down the progression of her disease.

Of course, Jenna is far too tough to let her disease slow her down. This vibrant girl enjoys an active life and brightens up the room wherever she goes. Jenna has plenty of friends and is active in playing wheelchair soccer. When she isn’t busy zooming across the court, she uses her power wheelchair to zip through her family’s home. But even with her tenacity, Jenna’s life isn’t without its struggles.

Creating Independence Through Custom Closets

Because of her disease, Jenna is unable to move freely around her room. She is even unable to reach the clothes in her closet. Her wish, to the surprise of everyone, was for a custom closet makeover. All Jenna wanted was to reach and pick out her own outfits without the help of anyone else. Her mother was surprised she didn’t ask for a horse or a dog, but all Jenna wanted was to be independent.

Closets by Design in St. Louis went right to work. Our team installed a complete custom closet as part of her room makeover that was designed for maximum accessibility. With pull-down rods and custom shelving, everything in Jenna’s closet is now within arm’s reach. Today, she is putting together her own outfits and picking out her clothes for school all on her own. It’s Jenna’s unstoppable spirit that makes her such a force to be reckoned with, we’re just happy to have had a part in helping her along the way.

Sharing Jenna’s Inspiring Story with the World

Our work with Make-A-Wish was documented by 919 Marketing, a national content marketing agency in North Carolina, to share Jenna’s story with the world. Jenna was an absolute joy to work with. She is easily one of the most incredible people we’ve ever met. In fact, we have a hard time watching the video without tearing up with joy. We were just so happy to make Jenna’s wish come true, but we couldn’t believe what happened next.

The powerful video of Jenna’s closet transformation went far beyond even our wildest dreams. The story of Jenna’s independence was so impactful and affecting that it earned a coveted award. The Telly Awards are a prestigious honor that recognize excellence in the world of video and television. Our work with Jenna took home a Bronze Telly Award in the General-Public Relations for Non-Broadcast category. Working with Jenna and her wonderful family was so fulfilling, but we’re beyond thrilled to see her inspiring story reach an even wider audience.
