What’s in your linen closet? If you’re like many people, you aren’t totally sure. That’s because the linen closet is often more than just a place to keep sheets and towels — it’s also a catchall for other items you don’t know where to store. For instance, when it’s in or near your bathroom, the linen closet may be where you keep extra toiletries or the hot rollers you use once or twice a year. Maybe it’s in the upstairs hallway and has somehow become the repository for your gift wrapping supplies. No matter where your linen closet is located, there’s a good chance that it needs to be reorganized. Without a lot of effort, you can discover what treasures you’ve tucked away in there and rework your storage plan to maximize the space.

Take Inventory

Whether you have a closet in your home built specifically for holding linens or whether you’ve designated an area of your bathroom, mudroom, or laundry room for the storage of sheets and towels, more than likely, you’re hanging on to items you no longer use or need. Take everything out of your linen closet and decide which things you should keep. If you’re still hanging on to the Thomas the Tank Engine sheets that your 17-year-old used as a kid, now is a great time to donate them to your favorite charity, along with any towels, table linens, etc. that you haven’t touched in ages. Throw out the threadbare towels and sheets with holes, or cut them up and use them as cleaning rags. Keep only the linens you use. Organization experts recommend keeping three sets of sheets and towels for each regularly occupied bedroom, two sets of sheets and towels per guest room, plus extra pillows and a blanket for every room.

Make a Plan

Often, linen closets are small and contain only a few shelves. If you simply cram sheets and towels onto the shelves, eventually, things become a jumbled mess; therefore, decide how you want to organize your linens before you begin putting them back in the closet. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Add adjustable shelves. If you don’t already have them, adjustable shelving makes closet organization much easier. You can leave more room for bulky items, like quilts and pillows, and create smaller areas for table linens or washcloths.
  • Try shelf dividers. They come in especially handy when your linen closet is multi-purpose. For instance, you can partition an area for laundry supplies, another for your iron, and others for your sheets and towels.
  • Use baskets, bins, or cubbies. With the right collection of containers, you can organize your linens in numerous ways. Perhaps you’d like to separate your sheets by size so all the twin sheets go in one bin, all the queen sheets go in another, and so on. Or maybe you’d prefer to designate a basket for each room in the house and put all the linens for the guest room in one bin, the kitchen linens in another, etc. Whatever arrangement you choose, containers will help you use your space more efficiently.
  • Put bulky items on the bottom. If you have extra quilts, blankets, or seasonal items, store those in the bottom of the closet. It’s best to have sheets, pillowcases, and towels on the middle shelves, so you can reach them easily. You can save the top shelves for smaller items you use less often, such as holiday napkins or extra pillows.
  • Use clear containers for non-linen items. When you have to store toiletries, tissue paper, or other items in your linen closet, consider using clear containers. That way, you don’t have to go through every basket or bin to find what you want.

Have you ever stared into your closet full of clothes and thought, “I don’t have a thing to wear”? If so, you may be tempted to go shopping, but what you really need is a closet makeover. In her book, “You Are What You Wear,” Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner says that most people wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. With a little effort, however, you can organize your closet so it’s easy to wear all the clothes you own. One of the best ways to maximize your wardrobe’s potential is to organize by outfits.

Start by Emptying Your Closet

That’s right, take out everything. In order to use all the clothes in your closet, you first have to see what’s in there. As you remove items, separate them into four piles — keep, mend, donate or consign, and toss. This is the perfect time to try on clothes you haven’t worn for a while. If something doesn’t fit or if you don’t like the way it looks on you, get rid of it.

Sort the Remaining Clothes

If you live in a climate that requires different attire for each season, start by separating your warm-weather clothes from the cold-weather ones. Then within each season, separate items into categories based on use, such as work, casual, dressy, and outdoor. At this stage, you can put away the clothes that are out of season. Whether you hang them in the back of your closet or store them in bins, the idea is to get them out of the way so you can focus on the clothes you’ll be wearing for the next few months.

Put Together Your Outfits

Now it’s time for some fun. See how many outfits you can create from what’s already in your wardrobe. An easy way to start is by laying out all your pants and skirts. Then take each top and see how many bottoms it pairs well with. Hopefully, each top will work with multiple bottoms. Next, pull out your shoes, belts, and other accessories to finish the outfit. Be creative and experiment with mixing textures and colors. Make sure to look at your dresses, sweaters, jackets, and suits as well to see how they work with the rest of your wardrobe.

Record Your Combinations

You don’t want to forget any of the fabulous new combinations you’ve discovered, so be sure to document them. Some people like to keep a wardrobe diary where they write down the various ways they can use each piece. Another option is to create a fashion album in your phone by taking pictures of the outfits as you put them together. You can even tap into your inner model and photograph yourself wearing each one.

Organize Your Closet

Once you know how all your pieces work together, you need to store them in a way that makes them easy to access. When you organize by outfit, you can set up zones for work clothes, casual wear, etc. This is where closet dividers come in handy. Even if you have a small closet, you can create zones to organize your clothes and accessories. Of course, when you have a walk-in closet, you have more room for additional categories. If, for instance, you like planning what you’re going to wear ahead of time, designate a section specifically for your weekly wardrobe. Over the weekend you can pick out the clothes you want to wear each day of the coming week. Then you can wake up and grab an outfit without having to think about it.

Garage organization is on the top of many to-do lists. While the primary purpose of a garage is to provide safe storage for vehicles, most garages have become storerooms for all the things we can’t (or don’t want to) keep inside the house. In fact, many garages are so packed with clutter that there’s not even room for a car. It’s estimated that only 30% of us actually park our cars in the garage!

If you’re ready to tame the clutter and tackle garage organization once and for all, follow these simple suggestions.

Make a Plan

Before you start dragging stuff out of your garage, think about how you want it to look after it’s clean and organized. Do you have sports equipment that you’d like to access quickly? Would you like to incorporate a workbench or gardening table into your garage? Do you need cabinets for storing cleaning and automotive supplies? If you can’t quite visualize where everything should go, the experts at Closets by Design can help you come up with a plan to get your garage organization off to a proper start. We’ll send a professional designer to your home for a free consultation. After measuring your garage and assessing your storage needs, we’ll create a custom design specifically for you.

Sort Your Stuff

Once you have a plan, it’s time to empty the garage. Depending on how much stuff you’ve accumulated, you may need to set aside a full weekend to complete your garage organization project. Check your local weather forecast and make sure it’s not expected to rain. You’ll need to leave things in your driveway as you sort and organize.

Begin by creating four piles: Keep, sell or donate, recycle, and toss. Then start going through everything. Keep only the items you need and use regularly. If you haven’t used something in the last two years, chances are you won’t use it again. If it’s something that can be sold easily at a garage sale or an online marketplace, put it in the sell pile. Tools, planters, and outgrown bikes are only a few of the items that get snapped up quickly. If, however, you prefer not to hassle with selling your belongings, donate them to your favorite charity. Check with your local government to see where to dispose of hard-to-recycle items, such as old paint, batteries, and LED light bulbs. Throw out anything that’s broken, expired, or obsolete (like that box of cassette tapes in the back corner).

Focus on the Floor

With everything out of the garage, now’s the time to clean the room. Clear away any cobwebs, sweep or vacuum the floor, and scrub away any oil or chemical spots left by your car or lawn equipment. If you want to make your garage truly exceptional, consider adding DesignFloor™.  DesignFloor is a interlocking sturdy tile system offered by Closets by Design and comes in a wide array of colors and patterns that will make your garage the envy of anyone who sees it.  And the best thing about our garage flooring is you can walk and drive onto it right away, no waiting for paint to cure and harden.  Use it the day it gets installed.

Utilize Vertical Space

When you begin putting your items back in the garage, don’t pile everything on that beautiful new floor. Remember that you have an abundance of storage space available on the walls and even the ceiling. With a wall storage system from Closets by Design, you can mount skis, golf clubs, bicycles, and other sports equipment to give your garage organization a tidy touch. Wire shelf accessories and bins provide an ideal space for storing lawn care products. Hooks are perfect for keeping rakes, mops, and hoses out of the way but still within easy reach. If you want to keep some items behind closed doors, consider adding a custom garage cabinet or a built-in closet. With the right combination of cabinets, shelving, and wall accessories, you can turn your garage into a well-organized storage area, and bring that car back inside where it belongs

]]>
If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you know how expensive everything has gotten, which makes stretching your food budget even more important than ever. One simple way to save money on groceries is to use all the food you buy.

According to the UN’s environment program, each year, globally, more than 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted. In North America, a staggering 43% of that waste occurs in the home and costs us a lot of money. How much? The average family of four wastes $1,500 a year on uneaten food!

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to save money on groceries and reduce food waste simply by how your store it.

Make a Grocery List

Have you ever popped into the grocery store to pick up one or two things and walked out with several bags of groceries full of impulse buys? Or have you ever bought a bag of rice or a dozen eggs only to get home and realize that you already had some? By spending a little time planning your trip to the store, you can save money on groceries and avoid buying items you don’t need.

  • Check your pantry and refrigerator to see what you have and what you need. If something (such as fresh broccoli or a head of cabbage) needs to be used soon, plan a meal around it.
  • When possible, plan your menu for the week and buy only the items you need for making those meals. Be sure to account for meals you plan to eat out at restaurants or someone else’s home.
  • Remember that buying in bulk or taking advantage of buy-one-get-one sales may save you money, but only if you use the products you buy. If you’re buying multiples of things with a limited shelf life (like fresh produce and dairy products), consider whether you will use them all before they expire.
  • Allow yourself to add only 3 items that are not on the list. Setting a limit to impulse purchases can really cut back on buying all the items that seem appealing when they are in front of you, especially if you bring your kids with you to the store. Get them involved in the rule of 3, so they don’t repeatedly bug you to buy everything they see.

Understand Date Labels on Food

Speaking of food expiration, did you know that date labels are not an indicator of a product’s safety, except on infant formula? In fact, dates aren’t required by federal law, and there are no universally accepted descriptions. So, while you may see “Sell By,” “Best By,” or “Use By,” the food should be safe, if handled properly, well beyond the date stamped on the package. Of course, if the product’s color or consistency has changed noticeably or if it has an unusual odor, you shouldn’t eat it. Most of the time, however, the date is merely the manufacturer’s way of letting retailers and consumers know when the food is at its freshest.

Reorganize Your Pantry to Save Money on Groceries

How many times have you reached for something like a can of diced tomatoes and realized that while you don’t have any tomatoes, you have four cans of black beans? If your pantry is cluttered with cans, boxes, and bags, it’s hard to know what you really have in there. On the other hand, a well-organized pantry allows you to easily see what you have and when you’re running low on things. Start reorganizing by pulling out everything. Throw away any items that are stale or spoiled. You may also find some items that have not been opened and you want to donate to a local food pantry.  Cleaning out items that you do not intend to use is a great way to eliminate the clutter.  If you find a lot of things you’d forgotten about pushed to the back of your pantry, then you should consider getting pull-out shelves. Pull-out shelves, like the ones in a Closet by Design custom pantry, let you access everything quickly and keep you from “losing” items in the recesses of deep cabinets.

Another easy way to keep track of what you have is to store dry goods, such as rice and cereal, in clear containers. The containers help the foods stay fresh longer, and they help you see when it’s time to buy more. In the same way, Lucite-fronted drawers are a great place to store granola bars and other wrapped snacks. If the food you buy is in plain sight, it’s more likely that you’ll eat it rather than let it go to waste, and it will also help you save money on groceries.

Let Closets by Design Help

A Closets by Design custom pantry allows you to organize your staples with ease and ultimately save money on broceries. With the right combination of shelving, drawers, bins, and dividers, you’ll have a place for everything. Clutter is any item that you hold on to but do not use, need, or want. Not only do these superfluous objects make it difficult to clean and organize your home, but they can also create stress – unless you have smart decluttering tips to follow.

According to a study done in 2016 by Cornell University, the stress caused by clutter may trigger coping and avoidance strategies such as oversleeping, eating junk food, and binge-watching media. But getting rid of clutter and the stress it causes does not have to be difficult. As organizational expert Barbara Hemphill points out, “Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.” If you have decided it is time to clear out the clutter in your home, here are some decluttering tips to help you begin the process.

Decluttering Tips – Focus on One Area at a Time

The thought of decluttering and organizing an entire home can feel overwhelming. That is why our top decluttering tip starts in one area, even if it is just a junk drawer in the kitchen. After you have thrown away all the used twist ties and rubber bands, the broken can opener, and the pens with no ink, then you can start clearing out the kitchen in earnest. Old sponges and scratched or broken plastic containers harbor bacteria, so toss them out. Gather up all the plastic grocery bags that are lurking in cabinets and take them back to the store for recycling. If you have appliances, gadgets, or dishes that you no longer use, give them to a local thrift store or your favorite charity. Get rid of old condiments in the refrigerator and expired food in the pantry. Once you have cleaned out the things you no longer need or use, it is time to reorganize and find a place for everything that is left. To keep clutter under control for the long run, onsider adding a custom pantry system. Closets by Design can help you create the perfect pantry for your space, incorporating shelves, drawers, baskets, and other design elements that will make organizing your kitchen easy.

Use the OHIO Rule

OHIO stands for “only handle it once.” Once you pick up an item, decide what to do with it right then, rather than shuffling it from one pile to another. This decluttering tip works particularly well where mail and paperwork are concerned. Toss junk mail and promotional items into the recycling bin or trash can as soon as you receive them. When possible, pay bills as soon as they arrive, rather than leaving them piled on a desk or countertop until the due date. If you are unable to pay them right away, have a system to put your bills in order by the due date so you know where they all are, and they are easy to find. For paperwork that you need to keep (such as receipts for work or taxes), create file folders, and use them. If you don’t already have a home office or if your current one isn’t working well, it may be time for an upgrade. Closets by Design offers custom desks designed with efficiency and taste in mind, and the desks can be combined with wall shelving and cabinets to create the ultimate home office. Once you have a place to organize all the paperwork that flows into your home, it is much simpler to follow the OHIO Rule.

Decluttering Tips – Out With the Old

While this decluttering tip can be applied to everything from outdated electronics to toys, it is especially applicable to shoes and clothing. Most of us have clothes in our closets that we never wear because they don’t fit, they’re damaged, or we simply don’t like or need them. If you have items in your wardrobe that you have not worn in the last year, it is time to get rid of them. You will be amazed at the space you free up, and you can then begin to organize the clothes you regularly wear. Not ready to donate these items? Put them in a box with the date on it. If, after six months, you have not been tempted to get something out of the box, you can feel confident you will not miss it when it is permanently gone. Another great way to manage the clutter in your closet is to have a dedicated space for everything in it. Closets by Design can customize your walk-in closet with adjustable shelves, cubbies, tie or jewelry drawers, and more. If you don’t have a walk-in, don’t worry — even a small closet can be carefully organized and customized with hanging bars, shoe racks, and adjustable shelving.

Utilize Your Garage

Once you have gotten rid of things that you no longer need or want, move on to the next decluttering tips: designate places for frequently used items (such as your yoga mat or chargers for electronic devices). Store any overflow items (like camping gear or beach toys) in see-through bins in your garage. To make the most of the storage space in your garage, let Closets by Design create a unique garage organizer to meet your specific needs. It is much easier to store your belongings with our combination of cabinets, shelving, countertops, and more.

Do you have a love-hate relationship with laundry or your laundry room? We spend an average of 16 minutes a day on laundry. That’s nearly eight hours a month! And if you have a large family, you probably spend much more time than that gathering and sorting, washing, drying, folding, hanging, and putting clean clothes away.

While some people claim that doing laundry is akin to meditating, others prefer to spend as little time as possible on the task. Whichever camp you belong to, one thing is certain: having an organized laundry room can make your clothes-washing routine much easier. Here are some suggestions for creating a laundry room that’s clean and efficient.

Declutter Routinely

Do you love the feel and smell of warm clothes fresh from the dryer but hate the sight of your disorganized laundry room? That’s understandable. Most laundry rooms tend to become dumping grounds for all sorts of things — dirty and clean laundry, clothes that need to be mended, old cleaning supplies, etc. To keep the mess from piling up, take 15 to 20 minutes every couple of weeks to clear out anything that’s taking up unnecessary space. You may also want to add tilt-out hampers, like the ones offered by Closets by Design. When you add multiple hampers, you can designate one for colors and another for whites, or one for dirty clothes and one for clean clothes that need to be folded. It’s much easier to get your laundry done when you don’t have to step around mounds of clothes.

Use All the Space

If you don’t already have cabinets in your laundry room, think about installing them to make full use of the vertical space that’s available. A combination of cabinets, drawers and pull-out shelves allows you to store cleaning products behind doors and keep frequently used items within easy reach. With Closets by Design custom cabinets, you can incorporate an ironing board drawer or a wall-mounted board to keep that ugly but essential tool out of sight. Both options save space while still making it simple to access your ironing board.

Even if your room is small, you probably have storage space that you aren’t utilizing. At a minimum, you may be able to install a countertop over your washer and dryer (so you have a place to sort and fold clothes) or a pull-down hanging rod for drying delicate items.

Make the Laundry Room Multi-Purpose

Laundry rooms are often located near a secondary entrance, like a garage or side door. As family members come inside, they frequently leave rain boots, jackets, umbrellas, sports gear, and other items piled in the laundry room. Why not go with the flow and create a multi-purpose mudroom? Group your machines, ironing board, and other laundry essentials on one side of the room and add cabinets, shelving, and hooks to the other side. You can even assign cubbies to each family member, so they have a dedicated place for their stuff. There are so many storage options available that are both functional and stylish. In addition to their wide array of cabinet styles, Closets by Design offers wall storage systems that will help you turn your messy space into a well-organized, multi-functional room. It’s estimated that more than 6.8 million Americans will buy homes this year. As exciting as it is to buy a new home, few people look forward to the moving process — packing up all the stuff at your existing home, safely transporting it to your new home, then unpacking all those boxes and finding a place for everything. The work involved can be overwhelming and exhausting. However, with a little planning and some good organizational tools, you can make unpacking after a move less stressful

Start With an Unpacking Plan

Hopefully, when you (or your movers) packed up your old house, you packed items by room and labeled all your boxes accordingly. This will make unpacking after a move much easier. Whenever possible, place boxes in the rooms where they should be unpacked. Resist the urge to start unpacking random boxes, or you’ll end up with odds and ends spread all over the house. Plan to unpack room by room, beginning with the most important rooms first like the kitchen and your bedroom/bathroom. Before you take out a single item, it’s good to have a general idea of where you want to start and having the boxes in the right place to unpack will help the process move along more quickly.

Begin Unpacking After a Move in the Kitchen

Unless you plan on eating out every meal, it’s important to get your kitchen basics set up and functional right away. Plug in any essential small appliances, like the coffee maker and toaster. If you want to put shelf liner in your cabinets, now is the time — before you unpack. Take a few minutes to think about how you’ll be moving around this new kitchen and figure out what the most logical place is for your pots and pans, dishes, glasses, etc. Where will your dry and canned goods go? If your new home doesn’t have adequate storage space, this is the perfect time to have a custom pantry installed. A well-organized pantry lets you easily see what you have and what you need, which, in turn, makes both grocery shopping and mealtime less stressful.

Move On to the Bedrooms

More than likely you’re going to be ready for a good night’s sleep unpacking after a move, so start by assembling and making up your bed. Decide where you want other bedroom furniture to go before you start unpacking any boxes. This is also the time to determine how you want to arrange your closet. It’s much easier to install a closet organization system before you begin piling clothes and shoes in there. Whether you have a walk-in or a reach-in closet, the perfect configuration of shelving, shoe racks, and hanging bars can make organizing your clothes so much easier.

Set Up Your Home Office

If you’re one of the many people working from home these days, you’ll need to get your office operational as soon as possible. A new home provides a blank slate for you to create an ideal space that can make your workday less chaotic. With a custom desk, cabinets, and wall shelving, your home office will be comfortable and organized.

Save the Garage for Last

Since most of the stuff we store in the garage isn’t essential, it’s best to get the rest of the house unpacked first. Plus, there’s a good chance that as you unpack in other rooms, you’ll find more things you want to put in the garage. Of course, you’ll want to unpack your toolbox, so it’s handy when you’re ready to hang pictures or install a shower rod, but otherwise, the garage can wait. However, when it’s finally time to start unpacking after a move and organize in the garage, be sure you make the most of the space by installing garage cabinets and a wall organizing system. These added features can help you get rid of clutter and make it easier to find the things you’re looking for when you need them.

February is the perfect time to fall in love — with organization! If your New Year’s resolution to improve your home organization has fallen by the wayside, these colder days are the perfect time to stay inside and create the living space of your dreams.

Spice Up Your Routine

Home organization doesn’t have to feel like drudgery. Look for ways to make it fun. Before you begin a new project, turn on some lively music. Or, if there’s an upbeat podcast you’ve wanted to hear, pop in some earbuds, and listen while you sort. When it’s time to reorganize your pantry, begin by throwing out expired goods in time with the music. Next, consider your lifestyle, and divide your pantry into cooking categories that work for you. For instance, you might group foods by type (baking goods, condiments, canned items, etc.), by meal (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner), or by some method unique to you. Add a little zest by choosing multicolored canisters to store dry goods such as pasta, rice, and cereal, but be sure the containers are see-through, so you can tell with a glance when it’s time to restock.

Be Creative With Home Organization

Just as your home reflects your unique personality, so can your storage spaces. Brighten up your bedroom closet by painting or wallpapering a wall. Use shower rings to snap purses onto a closet rod so you can quickly choose the right one. Instead of piling your jewelry in a box, add a custom jewelry organization drawer to your a walk-in closet or vanity so you can admire your treasures easily and also clearly see what you have.

Be Playful

Don’t feel that you have to follow anyone else’s rules of home organization or style. If your home office feels cluttered, find some fun containers to rein in the chaos. Place pens, pencils, scissors, etc. in coffee cans you’ve painted or wrapped with scrapbook paper. Use mason jars or pottery cups to hold paper clips, staples, or stamps.

Feel the Love

Because they yield quicker results, small spaces are usually more fun to organize. But rearranging a large space, like a garage, can be more satisfying in the long run. Tackle an overcrowded or messy garage by creating five piles: keep, sell, donate, recycle, and toss. Keep only the items you need and use regularly. Sell tools or machines that are taking up space and collecting dust. Donate items that would benefit your favorite charity. Check with your local government to see where to dispose of hard-to-recycle items, such as old paint, cleaning products, batteries, and LED light bulbs. Not only have you now created a tidy garage where you can find what you’re looking for easily, but you’ve also made some extra cash, supported a good cause, and helped the environment.

 Imagine How Happy You’ll Be

When you’re feeling less than enthusiastic about home organization, make a list of all the benefits you’ll see when your task is complete. The benefits may be specific to a particular room, or more general, such as saving you time and money, eliminating stress, and freeing up more time to spend with family and friends.

Cleaning your house is a constant chore, something you need to do before you can move on to the things you want to do. A good vacuum cleaner and the right cleaning products can help you make quick work of the job, but the best way to deal with dirt is not letting it in to begin with. That’s where mudrooms come in.

A mudroom is simply a designated space just inside a home’s entrance, where you can remove your coat and shoes and leave your umbrella and backpack in order to avoid tracking dirt inside your home. Here are some features good mudrooms have in common.

  • Plenty Of Storage

Consider a combination of cubbies, drawers, shelves, and baskets for storing shoes, sports equipment, rain gear, etc. You’ll need to decide if you want open cubbies and shelves where items are handy but may look messy or if you/d rather hide the clutter behind cabinet doors.

  • Hooks

Children are more likely to hang their coats and backpacks on a hook rather than inside a closet on hangers.

  • A Sitting Area

Having a place to sit makes it easier to get your shoes on and off. Consider installing a bench with a flip-up seat for extra storage.

  • Designated Spaces for Each Family Member

Assigning each person their own cubby, shelf, or basket will make it easier for them to find their coat and shoes as they are rushing to get out the door in the morning. Consider adding one for the family pet to hold their toys, keep their leash handy, and store a towel to wipe off wet or muddy paws.

  • Room To Expand

As your kids grow, you’ll need additional space for bigger shoes and more sports equipment. Hooks may need to be moved higher for ease of use and to accommodate larger jackets.

  • Plenty Of Light

Since the area may be small and possibly windowless, you’ll want to use a combination of track lighting and spotlights to make sure it’s well lit.

  • The Right Flooring

You need a surface that’s durable and easy to clean, like tile or wood. Consider adding a washable rug, like a bathmat, and maybe even a mat outside the door to catch some of the dirt before you enter the mudroom.

  • A Fan or Heater

To help provide a little relief from the heat or cold outside.

A mudroom can be created in the smallest of spaces. All you really need is a wall near the back or side entrance to your house.

If there’s a door leading from the garage into the house, the space next to it could be turned into a mudroom. Laundry rooms can also be reconfigured to include mudroom features. A hallway or staircase landing, or even the front hall closet, can be turned into a mudroom.

The key is designing it to make the best use of your available space, no matter how small. If you only have a narrow corner, be sure to make use of all vertical space, installing cabinets or shelves that reach toward the ceiling. If you only have one wall, shallow shelves that can store shoes and small baskets may be the way to go.
