The transition from summer to winter often brings the challenge of reorganizing our wardrobes. As temperatures change, the need for different clothing becomes apparent, but the process of switching out seasonal attire isn’t always straightforward.

One of the primary challenges many of us face is space. Winter clothing, with its heavy coats, chunky sweaters, and layers, demands more storage room than lightweight summer apparel, and most people do not have the space to store all seasons in one closet.  Where do you put all ”out of season items” without overcrowding your closet? And how do you ensure that they remain easily accessible throughout the season? This is where the expertise of Closets by Design comes into play. Our custom storage solutions are designed to maximize space, ensuring that every item, no matter how bulky, has a designated spot. With adjustable shelving, hanging racks, and drawer options, you can tailor your closet to fit the unique needs of all seasonal wardrobes.

Protect Your Possessions

Wool, cashmere, and other fine fabrics require special care to prevent damage from moths or environmental factors. Simply tossing them in with the rest of your clothes isn’t an option. Closets by Design understands these nuances. We install custom doors for the interior of your closet — in either solid or glass fronts — to offer extra protection for these delicate items, ensuring they remain in pristine condition, ready to wear at a moment’s notice.

Ease of Access

Then there’s the challenge of accessibility. It’s one thing to store away your summer clothes, but it’s another to ensure that your winter wear is easily reachable. No one wants to rummage through boxes or dig deep into their closet. Closets by Design’s approach to organization prioritizes ease of access. With pull-out drawers, clear-fronted bins, and strategically placed hanging sections, you can easily view and retrieve your essentials, making the daily ritual of selecting an outfit a pleasure rather than a chore.

Eye of Aesthetics

Don’t overlook aesthetics. An organized closet isn’t just functional; it’s also a visual delight. Closets by Design places emphasis on creating storage solutions that are not only practical but also beautiful. Our range of finishes, hardware options, and design details means your closet can reflect your personal style, elevating the entire experience of wardrobe transition.

Solutions on Your Schedule

The shift from summer to winter wear doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right expertise and custom solutions, it can be an opportunity to rejuvenate and refresh your space. Closets by Design offers the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics, ensuring that as the seasons change, your closet remains a haven of organization and style. Are you tired of the way your home looks and feels? Does the clutter overwhelm you or cause you to be depressed, frustrated or anxious? If so, consider reorganizing your space following the principles of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging objects to create balance and harmony and has been practiced for over four thousand years. While Feng Shui experts may spend a lifetime perfecting their craft, you can easily use a few key concepts to create a more pleasant environment in your home.

Welcome Fresh Energy into Your Home

The underlying belief in Feng Shui is that chi, or energy, makes up and moves through everything. When energy gets blocked, it becomes stagnant and creates disharmony in the surrounding area. The front door is considered to be the entryway of chi or the place where energy enters your home. Naturally, you want energy to flow in effortlessly, so it’s important to keep the vicinity clean and clutter-free. Unfortunately, the area around the front door is often a dumping ground for shoes, umbrellas, coats, etc. To contain the clutter and create a tidier space, consider adding a coat closet to your front hall or foyer. All you need is a blank wall, a little bit of room, and help from the professionals at Closets by Design. They can design a coat storage space with hanging bars, shoe racks, and adjustable shelves . You can even incorporate cubbies or baskets for each family member’s belongings, so everyone can contribute to keeping your entryway tidy and the energy flowing.

Create Space

In Feng Shui, the reason for getting rid of clutter is to open up space for new things to come into your life. Every time you get rid of stuff you no longer use or need, you make room for something fresh to enter. Clutter also traps energy and causes it to become stagnant, so a bookcase stuffed with books and magazines you may never look at again is not only an eyesore, it can make the entire room feel messy and disorganized. If you need to rein in an overflowing media collection (whether it consists of books, vinyl, or those CDs you can’t bear to part with), start by editing out the items you don’t want. Then find an efficient and neat way to store what remains. Closets by Design’s custom media centers offer a great solution. With a combination of shelves, drawers, and cubbies, you can organize all your media and electronics while hiding unsightly cables and streaming boxes. Best of all, we offer a variety of styles so your new piece will complement your existing furniture.

Remove Obstacles in Your Path

Any physical thing that impedes your progress is an obstacle, and if it interrupts your progress, it’s also disrupting the flow of energy through your home. Take a good look around your house. Where do you consistently run into obstacles? Is it the bar stool that juts out a little too far? Think about replacing it with one that’s a better fit. Has the plant in the corner of your dining room started taking over the space? Don’t be afraid to give it a good pruning. Do you trip over shoes and piles of clothes every time you walk through your bedroom? It’s definitely time for a custom closet. No matter what size your closet is, the experts from Closets by Design will work with you to make the most of all the space you have. If your closet is small, we’ll maximize every inch by incorporating the design features that suit your particular needs. And if you have a walk-in, we can include drawers, a tilt-out hamper, a jewelry drawer, and more to keep your clothing and accessories organized and within easy reach. When you have a designated place for everything, you can quickly put away any clothing or shoes that might otherwise become obstacles on your path.

You may not have Beyonce’s wardrobe or Kim Kardashian’s shoe collection, but you can still have a sensational walk-in closet. All you need is an empty room, the desire to be fabulous, and help from the talented professionals at Closets by Design. We’ll work with you to turn your spare bedroom into a diva closet that even a celebrity would envy.

Choose a Room to Transform

Have you realized that you never use that home workout room? Or maybe your youngest child has left the house. Whatever the reason, if you have an extra room, you can repurpose it as a walk-in closet. Ideally, the room you choose should be close to your bedroom, so you have easy access to your wardrobe. But if that won’t work in your home, you can put your closet anywhere you like, as long as you don’t mind a little walk to get there.

If you’re thinking about converting your current guest room but are worried about getting rid of the bed, don’t be. Closets by Design offers an array of wall beds  in single, double, and queen sizes. When not in use, these beds fold up into the wall, so they’re out of the way for your day-to-day routine. However, if you have company in town — voila, instant bed. Best of all, a wall bed can be integrated seamlessly into the design for your new closet, creating an elegant multi-functional space.

Decide Which Features You Want

When you work with the experts from Closets by Design, we’ll measure your room and itemize the contents of your wardrobe. Then we’ll sit down with you to create a custom design that’s perfect for your space. With dozens of material options and hundreds of features to choose from, our closet systems can be configured in a nearly infinite number of ways. Would you like an entire wall of adjustable shelves for your shoes and purses? Do you want a valet rod for putting together your outfit for the next day’s activities? Maybe you need a velvet-lined jewelry drawer for your sunglasses and earrings or a security drawer for your truly precious treasures. How about a tilt-out hamper for your dirty clothes or an island with drawers where you can fold clean laundry and stash sweaters or jeans? Those are only a few of the many options you can incorporate into your customized closet.

Express Your Inner Diva

Just as your wardrobe represents your unique style, so can your closet. Once your designs are exactly as you want them, you can choose from a variety of colors and even textures for your project.  Our offerings will match any taste and any décor.  And after you finalize your order, Closets by Design will build your units from the finest materials and professionally install them. Then it’s up to you to add the personalized touches that will take your closet to the next level of awesomeness.

At Closets by Design, we understand that a closet is more than a storage unit for your wardrobe, so we’ll help you create a soothing space where you can prepare for the upcoming day and unwind after it. It’s estimated that more than 6.8 million Americans will buy homes this year. As exciting as it is to buy a new home, few people look forward to the moving process — packing up all the stuff at your existing home, safely transporting it to your new home, then unpacking all those boxes and finding a place for everything. The work involved can be overwhelming and exhausting. However, with a little planning and some good organizational tools, you can make unpacking after a move less stressful

Start With an Unpacking Plan

Hopefully, when you (or your movers) packed up your old house, you packed items by room and labeled all your boxes accordingly. This will make unpacking after a move much easier. Whenever possible, place boxes in the rooms where they should be unpacked. Resist the urge to start unpacking random boxes, or you’ll end up with odds and ends spread all over the house. Plan to unpack room by room, beginning with the most important rooms first like the kitchen and your bedroom/bathroom. Before you take out a single item, it’s good to have a general idea of where you want to start and having the boxes in the right place to unpack will help the process move along more quickly.

Begin Unpacking After a Move in the Kitchen

Unless you plan on eating out every meal, it’s important to get your kitchen basics set up and functional right away. Plug in any essential small appliances, like the coffee maker and toaster. If you want to put shelf liner in your cabinets, now is the time — before you unpack. Take a few minutes to think about how you’ll be moving around this new kitchen and figure out what the most logical place is for your pots and pans, dishes, glasses, etc. Where will your dry and canned goods go? If your new home doesn’t have adequate storage space, this is the perfect time to have a custom pantry installed. A well-organized pantry lets you easily see what you have and what you need, which, in turn, makes both grocery shopping and mealtime less stressful.

Move On to the Bedrooms

More than likely you’re going to be ready for a good night’s sleep unpacking after a move, so start by assembling and making up your bed. Decide where you want other bedroom furniture to go before you start unpacking any boxes. This is also the time to determine how you want to arrange your closet. It’s much easier to install a closet organization system before you begin piling clothes and shoes in there. Whether you have a walk-in or a reach-in closet, the perfect configuration of shelving, shoe racks, and hanging bars can make organizing your clothes so much easier.

Set Up Your Home Office

If you’re one of the many people working from home these days, you’ll need to get your office operational as soon as possible. A new home provides a blank slate for you to create an ideal space that can make your workday less chaotic. With a custom desk, cabinets, and wall shelving, your home office will be comfortable and organized.

Save the Garage for Last

Since most of the stuff we store in the garage isn’t essential, it’s best to get the rest of the house unpacked first. Plus, there’s a good chance that as you unpack in other rooms, you’ll find more things you want to put in the garage. Of course, you’ll want to unpack your toolbox, so it’s handy when you’re ready to hang pictures or install a shower rod, but otherwise, the garage can wait. However, when it’s finally time to start unpacking after a move and organize in the garage, be sure you make the most of the space by installing garage cabinets and a wall organizing system. These added features can help you get rid of clutter and make it easier to find the things you’re looking for when you need them.

Audrey Hepburn once said, “Some people dream of having a big swimming pool. With me, it’s closets.” Does that sentiment resonate with you? Maybe you’ve outgrown your current closets, maybe you’ve recently downsized, or maybe you’ve never had enough space to begin with. Whatever the reason, if you’re looking to increase your closet space, it may be time to “create a closet.”

Adding extra closet space to your home doesn’t have to involve framing out walls and putting up drywall. Closets by Design can help you create a closet without all the fuss and even make it seem like the storage unit was part of the existing space from the start.

Determine Your Closet Space Needs

What do you need to store? Sometimes it’s best to collect all the items you need to store ‘somewhere’ and then design a space around that. Do you need more hanging room for clothing, shelves for extra linens and towels, or drawers and baskets for keepsakes? This is when bringing in a professional may help you come up with the right plan for organizing your stuff.  Closets by Design will send a design specialist to your home for a free consultation. Based on your exact storage needs, we’ll create a perfect closet space specifically for you.  You can also gain additional storage ideas by exploring this website. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, where we often post photos of our customers’ projects.

Find a Space

All you need is a blank wall or empty space to get started. Is there an empty corner in your laundry room, an odd nook somewhere, or a place under your staircase? All are great possibilities to create additional storage. If you’re still piling multiple jackets, scarves, and gloves on an old hat rack, look around your foyer– if there’s a blank space on a wall, that could be the new closet space. For a larger closet, consider converting a spare room in your home (an unused office or playroom, for instance) into a grand walk-in closet.

Choose Your Closet Space Style

Once you’ve decided where you want a closet and what functional elements that closet will have, it’s time to decide what style you want. Do you like a design that’s modern and bold with sleek corners and clean edges, or do you prefer a more sophisticated look with darker wood and glass doors? Maybe you want a closet space that’s primarily functional but with a stylish twist. There are so many options to choose from. When you work with a Closets by Design consultant, you can pick the features that will suit your needs and your sense of style all while complimenting your storage design.

Let Closets by Design Make Your Dream a Reality

Closets by Design has been an industry leader since 1982. Our professionally trained designers will help you create a closet space that’s perfect for you, no matter what size.  Contact us today to schedule your free in-home consultation, and we’ll help you turn your dream into a reality.

February is the perfect time to fall in love — with organization! If your New Year’s resolution to improve your home organization has fallen by the wayside, these colder days are the perfect time to stay inside and create the living space of your dreams.

Spice Up Your Routine

Home organization doesn’t have to feel like drudgery. Look for ways to make it fun. Before you begin a new project, turn on some lively music. Or, if there’s an upbeat podcast you’ve wanted to hear, pop in some earbuds, and listen while you sort. When it’s time to reorganize your pantry, begin by throwing out expired goods in time with the music. Next, consider your lifestyle, and divide your pantry into cooking categories that work for you. For instance, you might group foods by type (baking goods, condiments, canned items, etc.), by meal (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner), or by some method unique to you. Add a little zest by choosing multicolored canisters to store dry goods such as pasta, rice, and cereal, but be sure the containers are see-through, so you can tell with a glance when it’s time to restock.

Be Creative With Home Organization

Just as your home reflects your unique personality, so can your storage spaces. Brighten up your bedroom closet by painting or wallpapering a wall. Use shower rings to snap purses onto a closet rod so you can quickly choose the right one. Instead of piling your jewelry in a box, add a custom jewelry organization drawer to your a walk-in closet or vanity so you can admire your treasures easily and also clearly see what you have.

Be Playful

Don’t feel that you have to follow anyone else’s rules of home organization or style. If your home office feels cluttered, find some fun containers to rein in the chaos. Place pens, pencils, scissors, etc. in coffee cans you’ve painted or wrapped with scrapbook paper. Use mason jars or pottery cups to hold paper clips, staples, or stamps.

Feel the Love

Because they yield quicker results, small spaces are usually more fun to organize. But rearranging a large space, like a garage, can be more satisfying in the long run. Tackle an overcrowded or messy garage by creating five piles: keep, sell, donate, recycle, and toss. Keep only the items you need and use regularly. Sell tools or machines that are taking up space and collecting dust. Donate items that would benefit your favorite charity. Check with your local government to see where to dispose of hard-to-recycle items, such as old paint, cleaning products, batteries, and LED light bulbs. Not only have you now created a tidy garage where you can find what you’re looking for easily, but you’ve also made some extra cash, supported a good cause, and helped the environment.

 Imagine How Happy You’ll Be

When you’re feeling less than enthusiastic about home organization, make a list of all the benefits you’ll see when your task is complete. The benefits may be specific to a particular room, or more general, such as saving you time and money, eliminating stress, and freeing up more time to spend with family and friends.

As we begin a new year, home design trends start to emerge, leading experts to predict what we can expect for 2022 and beyond. As we approach the second anniversary of the start of the pandemic and we continue to spend more time at home, the trends reflect our growing desire to treat our homes as sanctuaries.

Earth Tones and House Plants

One home design trend is all about nature. Earth tones like greens, blues, and browns are now more popular as people move away from stark white and gray, in favor of surrounding themselves with warm tones. The term “biophilia” is also trending. Biophilia is defined as a human tendency to be close to or commune with nature. Designers believe 2022 will see a lot of people using house plants as décor to bring a bit of the outside into their homes.

Mudrooms

While people may invite nature into their homes, they still want to keep the dirt out. Mudrooms remain a popular home design trend option, but they have become less of a room, and more of a drop zone, maybe in a corner of the laundry room or the garage. These areas have plenty of storage for shoes, coats, and backpacks in the form of hooks, bins, and cubbies.

Home Offices

During the quarantine period at the start of the pandemic, people were forced to work from home. Some of those people never went back to the office. According to a Gallup poll taken in the fall of 2021, 45 percent of full-time United States employees worked from home at least part of the time in September. Where home offices used to be a luxury, they are now a necessity and a top home design trend. People need a dedicated space so they can keep their work life and their home life separate, a place where they can work and not be disturbed.

Multi-Purpose Rooms

For those who don’t have a room to dedicate to an office, the multi-purpose room has become popular. People have become creative with how they use their space. You may have an office in a corner of your living room. Maybe a spare bedroom doubles as a home gym or a hobby room.

Wall Beds

Another home design trend design that has seen an explosion in popularity is the Wall Bed. The home improvement website Houzz reported that searches for wall beds were up more than 2,000 percent from 2020 to 2021. Being able to fold away the bed during the day so the room can be used for something else goes hand-in-hand with the trend of multi-purpose rooms.

Storage Trends

Organization is a huge home design trend. People are moving away from utilitarian plastic bins and toward baskets made from natural materials as a way to store their things without taking away from their décor. And there is a big demand for hidden storage, including built-in storage units with drawers and cabinets, to keep spaces clutter-free and more relaxing.

Home Design Trends and Closets by Design

Whether you are looking for a home office, a hobby room, a mudroom, or something completely different, our designers will work with you to transform your space while staying within your budget. There are a wide variety of style options to fit your aesthetic. Each Closets by Design location has an on-site manufacturing facility where your project is custom built to order.

The seasonal clothing swap sneaks up on us twice a year, even though we know it’s coming. Maybe you’re longing to hang on to those carefree days of summer, and you want to wear your favorite sundress one more time. Or perhaps you love sweater weather so much that the idea of packing away all your bulky clothes is even more annoying.

Storing out-of-season clothes is easier if you have a few tried-and-true tricks that you practice every time you change out your wardrobe. From creating a custom closet or closet system to choosing the right types of storage, here are the best ways to store clothes when they go out of season.

Slim Down Your Wardrobe

The change of seasons is a great time to go through your wardrobe and decide what stays and what goes. If you haven’t worn it in the past six months, chances are you won’t wear it again. Let it go! Paring down your wardrobe means you have more room to keep the clothes you love. It will also make you feel less guilty about your seasonal shopping spree.

Choose the Right Type of Storage

Just like clothes, closet storage solutions are not one size fits all. Sometimes plastic bins are perfect, and in other cases, canvas or cotton bins are the best. Plastic bins with secure lids are ideal rather than cardboard boxes.

If you choose to store your clothes in plastic bins, where you store the plastic bins may be the deciding factor on whether you go with clear or opaque. Clear bins are easier to organize because you can see what’s inside. If you decide to keep the bins in an area with light, like a garage, opaque is ideal since it will prevent sunlight from damaging your clothes.

Don’t get completely airtight containers because good circulation helps prevent mold and mildew. Aim for weathertight containers that give your clothes a little room to breathe. For even more breathability and a nicer appearance, you can opt for fabric storage containers. Delicates, lace, and natural fabrics are better off in a linen, cotton, or structured fabric bin.

Skip vacuum-sealed bags altogether. These may make more room, but your clothing needs to breathe. Clothes will stay wrinkled and oddly shaped long after they are removed from these tight conditions.

Use Space in Your Closet

Just because it’s within reach doesn’t mean it’s taking up space! Use the top shelf of your closet, or a corner of the floor under short-hanging clothes, to stash your storage bins. You want to store clothes in a climate-controlled, dark space, so really, your closet is perfect.

You can find room in your closet without cramming together your clothes. Besides, it’s never a good idea to keep your clothes tightly packed. Adjustable shelves allow you to make room for different storage bins. You can also tuck away items that need to remain hung by putting them in garment bags and keeping them off to the side.

Customize Your Closet

If you don’t think you have space in your closet, you can make space. Designers and organizers from closet companies can assess your storage needs and figure out a way to make more room.

A custom closet space can give you more room to store the clothes you can’t wear all season and still keep them within reach. Closets by Design offers a variety of closet accessories to provide storage solutions for both walk-in and reach-in closets.

Look Outside Your Closet

Do you have a laundry room? Great! Do you have a guest room with a closet? Even better! You can turn any space in your home into an ideal spot to store clothes. Consider adding cabinets to a wall in your laundry room. The closet of a guest bedroom is ideal because you can easily hang or fold clothes without keeping them out of reach.

Keep in mind, it’s always best to store clothes in a climate-controlled space. If you put your storage bins in a basement, attic, or garage, make sure these areas are not too damp. Wherever you decide to store your clothes, Closets by Design can create a solution that works best for you.

There’s no need to buy new clothes every season (as much as you love to shop). Doing so would wreak havoc on your wallet. You can save money by making your clothes last longer, and storage solutions by Closets by Design can help you keep your expanding wardrobe organized.

Taking care of your clothing not only helps you save money, but it is also better for the environment. Not only is forgoing the washer and dryer every once in a while better for your clothes, it also saves energy. Here are seven ways to extend the life of your clothes — and save you time and money!

1) Wear Clothes More Than Once

In many cases, you don’t need to wash your clothes after wearing it only once. Wash clothes after one wear if it sits close to your skin (like leggings or underwear), or if you sweat while wearing it. Otherwise, wait a few wears before you stick other items of clothing in the wash. Cleansing products can strip clothes of their natural oils and softness.

2) Wash With Cold Water

Hot water weakens clothing fibers and strips clothing of its color. Stick with cold water when you can. Tests from one major appliance maker shows warm and hot water washing accelerates fading in of darker colors. Another bonus – cold water washing can save you money in energy costs.

3) Skip the Dryer

The dryer is infamous for shrinking clothes, but heat can also ruin fibers over time. Want proof? Dryer lint is tiny fibers of clothing that are lost every time you run the dryer. Save energy (and money in the long run) by hang-drying your clothes outside or consider hanging clothes on a drying rack in your laundry room.

4) Follow Wash Care Instructions

Read the wash care instructions on your clothing labels. Different fabrics have unique needs, and these instructions are meant to help you protect your clothes. Closets by Design installs shelves with pullout wire mesh baskets or divided hampers in the laundry room so you can sort and separate clothing to avoid delicate pieces of clothing getting washed in the wrong cycle or having brightly colored clothing bleed into your whites.

5) Treat Stains Immediately

For all fabric stains, it is important to treat spots as soon as possible to prevent them from setting. Experts recommend blotting a stain rather than rubbing it. Blotting draws out the stain while rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fabric. If you are on the go, carry a stain removing pen with you. To store all your stain treatments and other laundry day essentials, Closets by Design can design and install custom cabinetry and shelving around your current washer and dryer in your laundry room to store everything in a convenient and organized manner.

6) Learn How To Make Repairs

Get a sewing kit and learn how to use it. Repairing a small hole or broken seam doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. It can be easy and fun to make simple repairs to your clothes, and this knowledge ensures they will live longer in your closet. You can also use your sewing kit to transform an old piece of clothing into something new. You don’t need to toss your favorite pair of jeans just because they are ripped at the knee. Sew a unique patch into the hole or turn the jeans into a pair of shorts.

7) Store Clothing Properly

Hanging some garments can distort their shape, and they are better off folded. When you do use hangers, be sure to use the right ones. Fabric hangers are best with lightweight clothes while wooden hangers work best with heavier items, like suits and blazers.

It’s a great idea to keep clothes out of direct sunlight so their color doesn’t fade. Speaking of color, if you color-code your closet, you’ll find what you’re looking for more easily. This means you won’t forget that beautiful shirt you only wore once!
